Have you seen the movie Misery? It’s a movie based on the novel by Stephen King, Misery. Anyway, Misery is about an author Paul Sheldon who writes a series of books that focus on a character Misery Chastaine. While Paul is headed back home from the mountains after finishing the final book in the Misery series, he crashes his car on a snowy road in Colorado. Paul is pretty much almost dead from the crash and injuries, but unfortunately he is found by his “number one fan” Anne Wilkes. The moral of the story is Anne is crazy, lonely and a very obsessed fan of the character Misery Chastaine and the novels. She reads the final manuscript of the final novel and becomes very, very upset with Paul because Paul kills Misery in the last book of the series. (Even though Paul was warned by agents and friends that it was a bad idea to kill off the main character.) Well she nurses Paul back to health and holds him hostage and abuses him until he agrees to rewrite the novel allowing Misery to live. One of the famous lines in this movie is “You dirty birdie. You killed my Misery!”
Well, that movie came to mind while I was excitedly thinking about the last Harry Potter book: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which will be released on July 7, 2007. J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series revealed some clues that two characters will be killed off in the final book. This frightens fans all around the world that one of them may in fact be the main character, Harry Potter. Some think that Rowling doesn’t want another author to continue with the Harry Potter novels so she may kill him off. This has sparked a lot of controversy and Rowling has even been warned by many including author Stephen King and John Irving that killing Harry would be a bad idea. Does Misery ring a bell? Not saying at all that I would want Rowling to end up like Paul, but I know there would be so many angry fans out there if Harry were to “kick the bucket.” Hopefully fans around the world won’t be screaming, “You dirty muggle! You killed my Harry!”
